Angel Dust: A Brief History
In the 1950s the drug phencyclidine was introduced as a surgical sedative. This is also known as PCP … aka angel dust. It’s dissociative hallucinogenic drug which puts people in an altered state of mind. Though PCP was widely accepted at first, it was discontinued within about a decade because of the many negative side effects. Think: psychosis, anxiety, paranoia, and dysphoria. Which may help explain some of the dangers of using angel dust recreationally.
Angel Dust is also known by the names ozone, trank, and rocket fuel. Marijuana or tobacco cigarettes dipped in PCP are called illy, wet, or fry. It’s a psychedelic with a high that introduces out-of-body experiences and hallucinations.
And, yes, it is illegal. I’s classified as a Schedule II substance under the Controlled Substances Act. However, people still manufacture and sell it. This illicit production has made it one of the most abused drugs in the United States.
What Happens When You Take Angel Dust?
One of the core things that makes PCP stand out is that it affects multiple neurotransmitters in the brain. So, while other drugs may only affect dopamine or serotonin levels, PCP will influence your norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine levels.
Some of the most common short-term symptoms:
- A powerful sense of euphoria.
- Vivid hallucinations.
- Reduced sense of coordination or balance.
What are the Long-Term Effects?
In most cases, people turn to angel dust due to the vivid hallucinations you can experience once you take the drug. Unfortunately, the draw of these visions and hallucinations often leads to most people ignoring the long-term effects of excessive use, such as:
- Stuttering or slurring words.
- You may find it more challenging to remember simple events.
- It often leads to anxiety and depression.
- It may lead to suicidal thoughts.
- It can create flashbacks or persistent hallucinations, even after you stop taking the drug.
