What Is Transitional Living at Heartwood Recovery?

Our transitional living program is not a standard sober house. It is an integrated component of Heartwood Recovery’s full continuum of care — designed specifically for men who have completed residential treatment and are ready to take their next step toward independence while continuing structured clinical programming.

Upon successful completion of Men’s Residential Treatment, clients are strongly encouraged to transition into our sober living home in Downtown Austin. While in transitional living, residents simultaneously participate in our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), ensuring continued therapeutic support, clinical oversight, and accountability throughout the transition.

This combination — supervised recovery housing plus full-time clinical programming — is what sets Heartwood apart from standalone sober living houses in Austin.

What's Included

Structured Schedule

Daily structure provides the foundation for recovery success. Our transitional living program includes set wake times, curfews, house meetings, and scheduled activities that help men develop healthy routines and time management skills essential for independent living. This structure isn’t about control—it’s about creating consistency that supports sobriety. Men learn to balance work or school responsibilities with recovery activities, social connection, and self-care in a way that becomes sustainable long-term.

Curfew & House Rules

Clear expectations and boundaries create safety in early recovery. Our curfew ensures clients are home during evening hours when vulnerability to relapse can be highest. House rules address everything from cleanliness to guest policies to respectful communication. These guidelines aren’t arbitrary—they’re designed based on what supports recovery success. Learning to live within healthy boundaries is itself a recovery skill that serves men for years to come.

Drug Testing

Random drug and alcohol testing provides accountability and early intervention if struggles arise. Testing isn’t punitive—it’s protective. Catching any lapses early allows our team to adjust support and prevent full relapse. This level of accountability helps men build trust with themselves and their support systems. Family members and loved ones have peace of mind knowing their person is in a monitored environment.

Peer Leadership

Our transitional living community operates with peer leadership where men hold each other accountable and support each other’s growth. More experienced residents mentor newer arrivals, creating a culture of service and giving back. This peer accountability is powerful. Men learn to both ask for help and offer support—skills that extend far beyond transitional living into all areas of life and recovery.

Step-Down Clinical Support

While transitional living is a step toward independence, clients aren’t cut off from clinical support. Many residents attend our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Outpatient Program (OP) while in transitional living, maintaining therapeutic relationships and ongoing treatment. Even for those who have completed formal programming, our clinical team remains available for check-ins, crisis support, and guidance as needed. The goal is supported independence, not isolation.

Alumni Connection

Residents in transitional living automatically become part of our alumni network. This includes regular alumni meetings, service opportunities, social events, and lifelong connection to men who have walked the same path.
Since Heartwood Recovery was established in 2017, we’ve built a robust alumni community throughout Austin. This network provides ongoing support and accountability that extends years beyond transitional living.

Who Benefits Most From Transitional Living

Men with Early Sobriety

Transitional living is ideal for men who have completed residential or PHP treatment and established initial sobriety but aren't ready for completely independent living. This phase of recovery requires continued structure and accountability.

Wanting Independence + Support

The beauty of transitional living is the balance it provides. Men have more freedom and responsibility than in residential treatment, but they're not navigating early recovery alone. It's independence with a safety net.

Returning to Work or School

Many men in transitional living are employed or enrolled in school. Our location in Downtown Austin provides easy access to jobs, educational opportunities, and the resources necessary for rebuilding life alongside recovery.

Needing Peer Community

Isolation is dangerous in early recovery. Transitional living provides built-in peer community—men who understand the struggles, celebrate the victories, and provide accountability when needed. These relationships often become lifelong friendships.

Who Is Transitional Living For?

Heartwood Recovery’s transitional living program is designed for men who:

  • Have completed a residential addiction treatment program
  • Are committed to working a 12-step program of recovery
  • Need structure, accountability, and peer support during early sobriety
  • Are continuing in PHP or stepping down from higher levels of care
  • Want a safe, substance-free environment while rebuilding their daily lives

If you or a loved one is approaching the end of residential treatment and looking for a sober living home in Austin, our transitional living program offers a level of clinical integration and oversight that most standalone sober houses cannot provide.

What to Expect in Our Transitional Living Program

A Boutique, High-Accountability Environment

Our transitional living home maintains a maximum capacity of 8 clients. This intentionally small setting means every resident receives individualized attention and support — not a number in a crowded house.

Live-In Property Manager

A dedicated, live-in property manager is on-site at all times to facilitate house meetings, provide support and accountability, administer drug testing, and assist residents with the challenges that arise in early recovery.

Full Care Team Support

While in transitional living, residents retain access to Heartwood Recovery's full clinical care team. Professional support doesn't end when residential treatment does — it continues throughout the transitional phase.

12-Step Immersion

Heartwood Recovery is rooted in the 12-step approach to addiction recovery. Transitional living residents are expected to actively work a program, maintain a sponsor, and attend regular meetings as part of daily recovery life. Our 12-Step Immersion Treatment philosophy extends seamlessly into this phase of care.

Length of Stay

Length of stay in transitional living is typically 1 to 2 months, depending on each client's individual circumstances and clinical progress. Upon completion, Heartwood's team assists with planning the next transition — whether that means moving to independent sober living or returning home.

Why Transitional Living Matters

Long-Term Recovery Continues Here

Upon successful completion of residential treatment, our clients are highly encouraged to continue their recovery journey by moving to our transitional living home while completing our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). This seamless transition maintains momentum and prevents the common pitfall of leaving structured treatment too quickly. Research consistently shows that longer time in treatment correlates with better outcomes. Transitional living extends that treatment timeline in a way that balances support with increasing independence.

Relapse Prevention in Action

The transition from treatment back to “real life” is one of the highest-risk periods for relapse. Transitional living provides a middle ground where men can practice their recovery tools while still having structure, accountability, and peer support. Living with other men in recovery means having people who notice if you’re struggling, call you out when needed, and celebrate your progress. This daily accountability prevents small struggles from becoming major relapses.

Skill Development

Transitional living teaches practical skills that support independent sober living: managing finances, maintaining employment, handling conflicts with roommates, keeping a clean living space, balancing responsibilities, and asking for help when needed. These skills are practiced daily in a supportive environment where mistakes become learning opportunities rather than catastrophes.

Bridge to Full Independence

Our transitional living program typically lasts 1–2 months depending on individual circumstances. During this time, our team works with each client to plan the next transition—whether that’s moving to sober living elsewhere in Austin, returning home, or establishing independent housing. We don’t just discharge clients into uncertainty. We help create concrete plans with backup options, connect men with resources, and ensure they have ongoing support systems in place.

Why Transitional Living Matters in Recovery

The period immediately following residential treatment is one of the most vulnerable stages of recovery. Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) consistently shows that longer, more continuous engagement with treatment and recovery support services significantly improves long-term sobriety outcomes.

Transitional and sober living environments provide a critical buffer — offering a substance-free home, peer accountability, and continued connection to clinical care while men gradually rebuild the structure and independence required for long-term recovery.

At Heartwood, we believe this step in the continuum is too important to leave to chance. That’s why our transitional living program is not an afterthought — it is a fully staffed, clinically connected phase of care with the same attention to individualized treatment that defines everything we do.

Insurance & Costs

Transitional living housing itself is private pay and not typically covered by insurance. We also work with out-of-network benefits when clients have coverage and can pay their out-of-pocket costs.

Our admissions team will explain all costs upfront during the initial consultation so you understand exactly what to expect financially.
