Heartwood Recovery’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides structured addiction treatment for men who need robust clinical support while maintaining work, school, or family responsibilities. Our IOP offers the right balance of intensity and flexibility, allowing men to practice recovery skills in real-world situations while receiving comprehensive clinical care.
This program is hosted at our conveniently located South Austin facility and combines individual therapy, group work, family involvement, trauma-informed care, and 12-Step immersion. Whether you’re stepping down from PHP or entering treatment while living in the community, our IOP provides the clinical depth and accountability necessary for lasting recovery.
Our IOP is designed for men who need substantial clinical programming but don’t require full-day PHP supervision. This program works in several scenarios:
After completing our PHP or residential program, IOP provides continued intensive support while clients transition to more independent living and return to work or school.
Men who are working, in school, or have family obligations but need structured evening programming to establish or maintain sobriety.
Men who don’t require 24/7 residential care or full-day PHP but need more support than weekly outpatient therapy provides.
The Intensive Outpatient Program at Heartwood Recovery was thoughtfully designed to provide support, education, accountability, and structure for men seeking lifelong recovery.
Multiple individual therapy sessions per week with your assigned clinician addressing underlying issues, developing coping strategies, and working through trauma and co-occurring symptoms.
12-Step education groups, step work with sponsors, and regular attendance at local AA/NA meetings to build connections with Austin’s recovery community.
Process groups, relapse prevention groups, and educational groups throughout the week. Small group sizes ensure meaningful participation.
Trauma-informed care woven throughout IOP programming to help men process traumatic experiences safely.
Support with community reintegration including resume building, job searching, school enrollment, or volunteer work.
Regular family therapy sessions that repair relationships, improve communication, and educate loved ones about addiction and recovery.
Training in essential skills for independent living, healthy communication, managing finances, and building routines.
Education on nutrition, fitness, sleep hygiene, and physical health as foundations for mental and emotional wellbeing.
Initial and random drug and alcohol testing is provided and required for enrollment in IOP. This accountability measure supports recovery and helps identify any struggles early.
Our IOP program runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at our South Austin location. The duration varies based on individual needs, with typical tracks of 8-12 weeks.
While the schedule is consistent for all IOP clients, each person receives a tailored clinical approach based on their specific needs. Our intentional staff-to-client ratio allows us to provide truly individualized treatment.
Housing is not included in IOP. Clients have several options:

Our upscale transitional living home in Downtown Austin provides structured sober housing with accountability, peer support, and a live-in property manager. This is highly recommended for clients completing PHP or residential treatment.

Men with a stable, supportive home environment may live at home while attending IOP.

In some cases, we can help find suitable nearby sober living options.
IOP provides the clinical structure necessary for recovery success while allowing flexibility to maintain work, school, family responsibilities, and other aspects of daily life.
Regular clinical contact, group attendance, and drug testing create accountability that supports sobriety. Men stay connected to their treatment team and peers.
Our IOP offers more clinical support than standard outpatient programs. Our commitment to individualized care, trauma-informed treatment, and comprehensive services ensures men receive the depth of support necessary for lasting change.
Gender-specific programming creates space for authentic connection and vulnerability. Men work through issues specific to male experiences and build brotherhood with others who understand their journey.
Our IOP integrates clients into Austin's robust recovery community through regular attendance at local meetings, connection with sponsors, and involvement with our alumni network.
Most addiction treatment is covered by private insurance. We are in-network with:
We also work with out-of-network benefits when clients have coverage and can pay their out-of-pocket costs. Our admissions team will verify your insurance and explain your options during the initial consultation.
If you need intensive treatment while maintaining certain responsibilities, or if you’re looking for continued support after residential treatment or PHP, our Intensive Outpatient Program provides the structure and clinical depth necessary for recovery success.
Our staff-to-client ratio at Heartwood Recovery is intentional and allows us to provide a truly individualized approach for each client. While the schedule may be consistent, your treatment plan is tailored to your specific needs.
