Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Who PHP Is For

Our PHP is designed for men who need full-day clinical programming but don’t require 24/7 residential supervision. This program works in several scenarios:

Stepping Down from Residential Treatment

After completing a residential program, PHP provides continued intensive support while clients transition to more independent living in our transitional housing or at home.

Standalone Intensive Treatment

Men who are living in a stable environment but need structured daily programming to establish or maintain sobriety can enter PHP directly without residential treatment.

Return to Structure After Relapse

In some cases, men who have lapsed in their recovery need the accountability and intensity of full-time programming. PHP offers this structure while allowing clients to begin rebuilding their lives.

What PHP Includes

The Partial Hospitalization Program at Heartwood Recovery was thoughtfully designed to provide support, education, accountability, and structure for men seeking lifelong recovery.

Individual Therapy

Multiple individual therapy sessions per week with your assigned clinician. These sessions address underlying issues driving addiction, develop personalized coping strategies, and work through trauma, family dynamics, and co-occurring mental health symptoms.

Group Therapy

Daily process groups, relapse prevention groups, and educational groups throughout the week. Our small group sizes ensure meaningful participation where every client has space to share, receive feedback, and build connections with peers working toward the same goals.

Trauma Integration

Trauma-informed care woven throughout PHP programming. Our clinicians help men process traumatic experiences safely while building emotional regulation skills that support recovery.

Family Therapy

Regular family therapy sessions that repair relationships, improve communication, and educate loved ones about addiction and recovery. Family involvement strengthens the support system clients rely on long-term.

12-Step Immersion

Daily 12-Step education groups, step work with sponsors, and regular attendance at local AA/NA meetings. Community integration through off-campus meetings helps clients build connections with Austin’s recovery community.

Medication Management & Psychiatric Services

Comprehensive medication management and psychiatric support throughout enrollment. Our team monitors mental health symptoms, adjusts medications as needed, and ensures clinical stability.

Case Management

Support with community reintegration including resume building, job searching, school enrollment, or finding volunteer work. Case managers help clients address practical needs and prepare for life after PHP.

Life Skills Groups

Training in essential skills for independent living, healthy communication, managing finances, building routines, and other practical tools that support long-term recovery.

Meditation & Wellness Groups

Mindfulness practices, stress management techniques, and wellness training that help men develop healthy coping mechanisms beyond clinical sessions.

Music & Art Therapy

Experiential activities that provide creative outlets for processing emotions and building self-awareness in recovery.

Health & Wellness Training

Education on nutrition, fitness, sleep hygiene, and physical health as foundations for mental and emotional wellbeing.

Drug Testing

Initial and random drug and alcohol testing is provided and required for enrollment in PHP. This accountability measure supports recovery and helps identify any struggles early.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a structured addiction treatment program that provides intensive therapeutic support during daytime hours while allowing clients to return home each evening. PHP is considered the second-highest level of care in the continuum of addiction treatment, offering more clinical intensity than traditional outpatient programs while providing greater flexibility than residential treatment.

At Heartwood Recovery, our PHP program delivers 6 hours of programming per day, five days per week.

This level of care is ideal for men transitioning from residential treatment, those who need intensive support but have stable housing, or individuals whose work or family responsibilities require a more flexible schedule.

PHP vs. Residential Treatment: Understanding the Difference

Many men considering addiction treatment wonder whether they need residential care or if PHP is the right fit. Understanding the key differences helps you make an informed decision:

Clinical Intensity

PHP

  • 6 hours of intensive programming per day, five days per week
  • Clinical support during program hours (9 AM – 3 PM)
  • Return home evenings and weekends

Residential Treatment

  • 24/7 structured environment with round-the-clock clinical supervision
  • Typically 4-6 hours of daily programming plus additional therapeutic activities
  • Full immersion in recovery-focused environment

Living Arrangements

PHP

  • Clients return home each evening
  • May stay in our transitional living program for additional structure
  • Practice recovery skills in real-world settings

Residential Treatment

  • Clients live on-site at our South Austin facility
  • All meals, accommodations, and activities provided
  • Complete separation from outside stressors

Schedule Flexibility

PHP

  • Maintain work responsibilities
  • Attend to family commitments
  • Begin practicing recovery skills while receiving intensive support

Residential Treatment

  • Full commitment required
  • Limited outside contact
  • Best for those needing complete separation from triggering environments

Note: Both programs at Heartwood Recovery utilize the same evidence-based treatment modalities, including individual therapy, group counseling, 12-Step immersion, family therapy, and our fitness program. The primary difference lies in the structure and intensity of the daily schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions About PHP Treatment

How long does the PHP program last?

Most clients participate in PHP for 4-8 weeks, though treatment length is individualized based on clinical needs and progress. Some men complete PHP in 3-4 weeks, while others benefit from 10-12 weeks of intensive programming. Your clinical team will work with you to determine the appropriate length of stay based on your progress and recovery goals.

Can I work while in PHP?

Yes, many clients maintain part-time or full-time employment while attending PHP. Our 9 AM to 3 PM schedule allows for evening and weekend work responsibilities. We’ve successfully supported professionals including remote workers, business owners, and those using FMLA. Discuss your specific situation with our admissions team to create a plan that supports both your recovery and your career.

What’s the difference between PHP and IOP?

PHP provides more intensive programming (30 hours per week) compared to IOP (9-12 hours per week). PHP is the higher level of care, appropriate for men who need more structure and support. As you progress, you may transition from PHP to IOP. Both levels utilize evidence-based treatment, but PHP offers more frequent therapy sessions and clinical support.

Do I need to complete residential treatment before PHP?

No, PHP can be an entry point into treatment for men with stable housing and support systems. Many clients begin their recovery journey in PHP rather than residential care. Our clinical team will assess whether PHP is appropriate or if a higher level of care is recommended based on factors including severity of substance use, medical detox needs, mental health concerns, home environment stability, and support system strength.

What if I relapse during PHP?

Relapse is sometimes part of the recovery process, and we approach it with compassion and clinical expertise. If you experience a setback, our clinical team will assess your needs and may recommend a brief return to residential treatment, increased session frequency, medication-assisted treatment evaluation, or enhanced support services. The goal is to provide the level of support you need to maintain sobriety and continue progressing.

Is family involvement encouraged?

Yes, family therapy is an important component of our PHP program. We offer individual family therapy sessions, multi-family group sessions, family education about addiction and recovery, boundary-setting and communication skills training, and support for loved ones navigating their own healing. We encourage family participation while respecting client autonomy.

What insurance do you accept?

We are in-network with Magellan Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, MultiPlan, Ambetter, and Moda Health. We also work with many out-of-network plans and help clients maximize their benefits. Contact our admissions team at 737-325-3556 for free insurance verification and a detailed explanation of your coverage.

Can I attend PHP if I live outside Austin?

Yes, many clients travel to Austin specifically for our PHP program. Options include staying in our transitional living program, finding temporary housing in Austin, or relocating to Austin for the duration of treatment. Our admissions team can help you explore housing options and plan your logistics.

What happens after PHP?

We develop a comprehensive continuing care plan that may include step-down to IOP, traditional outpatient therapy, ongoing 12-Step involvement, alumni program participation, and connection with Austin recovery community. Our goal is to ensure you have ongoing support and resources as you maintain long-term sobriety.
